Block Island School

New Shoreham, Rhode Island

Project: Addition and renovations
Area: 36,330 square feet

While Block Island’s population experiences only modest population growth, its only school was much in need of renovation as well as expansion to meet the demand for new academic program spaces. Saccoccio & Associates devised a design plan to be completed in three phases with minimal disruption to normal school activities. The initial phase of work produced a new gymnasium, media center/library and administrative offices. These enhancements allowed for later conversion of the existing gym into two levels for classrooms, an art studio and cafeteria, and phase three transformed the original library into a music studies area. The new building wing complements the renovated building facade, mimicking the original gabled roof line and other traditional design elements.
